A method is described for measuring the degree of change in cross-section in a constant cross-section bolt or rod without visual or other physical access to the full length of the bolt. The method is useful for measuring the degree of rust, corrosion, change in chemical/structural composition or physical damage such as fractures or cracks, in constant cross-sectional bolts or rods such as those installed in telephone poles, bridges, concrete buildings, and other structures where there is no access to the middle or centre portion of the bolt. The method uses transmitted and/or reflected acoustic energy to determine changes in cross-sectional area from one end to the other of the measured bolt. Also provided is a portable electronic device incorporating/encompassing the method and useful for determining the changes in cross-sectional area due to corrosion, fractures, cracks or other physical damage.
