A system and method of information dissemination that permits the user to listen to the specific content of information when and where he or she wants to. A radio or television receiver system receives information from an FM subcarrier, a television vertical blanking interval transmission, a television separate audio program transmission or a dedicated channel and stores the transmitted information in a memory. A user interface allows selection from the memory of the stored information via a set of menus controlling a hierarchical database, so as to access particular items of information. Typically, the system includes RAM and/or a storage medium such as a digital audio tape, a magneto-optical mini-disk, a magnetic disk or optical disk, sufficient to store information for 10 hours of audio. A decompression device accepts the accessed compressed digital audio information items which may have been encrypted and transforms them into spoken speech. The user interface is either by voice or a single or multi-position switch allowing scanning through and selection from the menu items. The signal for such a device is generated by converting analog audio signals into a digital audio data stream which may be encrypted. The encrypted digital data stream is compressed and inserted on the radio or television carrier via an FM subcarrier, the television vertical interval or the separate audio program channel of a television transmitter. The system is also capable of transmitting alphanumeric data and converting this alphanumeric data to a voice form using a speech synthesizer.

Un système de récepteur radio ou de télévision reçoit des informations d'une sous-porteuse FM, d'une transmission à intervalles de suppression de trame de télévision, d'une transmission de programme de télévision audio séparée ou bien d'un canal spécialisé, et il stocke les informations transmises dans une mémoire. Une interface utilisateur permet la sélection, à partir de la mémoire, des informations stockées par l'intermédiaire d'un ensemble de menus gérant une base de données hiérarchique, afin d'accéder à des articles d'informations particuliers. Le système comprend typiquement une mémoire vive et/ou un support de stockage tel qu'une bande audio numérique, un mini-disque magnéto-optique, un disque magnétique ou un disque optique, suffisant pour stocker dix heures d'informations audio. Un dispositif de décompression accepte les articles d'informations audionumériques comprimés faisant l'objet d'un accès, lesquels peuvent avoir été codés, puis ils les transforment en paroles prononcées. L'interface utilisateur est soit par paroles soit un commutateur à position unique ou multiple permettant l'exploration et une sélection parmi les articles des menus. Le signal destiné à un tel dispositif est généré par conversion de signaux audio analogiques en un flux de données audio numériques pouvant être codé. Le flux de données numériques codées est comprimé et inséré dans la porteuse radio ou de télévision par l'intermédiaire d'une porteuse FM, l'intervalle entre trames de télévision ou le canal de programme audio séparé d'un émetteur de télévision. Le système est également capable d'émettre des données alpha numériques et de les convertir sous forme vocale à l'aide d'un synthétiseur de paroles.
