A remote control system for a locomotive is provided. The system comprises a primary control entity and a locomotive control device adapted for being located onboard the locomotive. The primary control entity generates primary command data conveying a command selected from a set of commands where at least one command is indicative of a change of control entity. The primary command data is transmitted to the locomotive control device. The locomotive control device receives primary command data from the primary control entity and secondary command data from a second control entity distinct from the primary control. entity. In response to primary command data conveying a change of control entity, the locomotive control device issues local control signals for causing the locomotive to execute commands derived on the basis of the secondary command data. In the absence of primary command data conveying a change of control entity, the locomotive control device is also adapted to discontinue the issuance of local control signals causing the locomotive to execute commands conveyed by the secondary command data.
