A method for automatically displaying map symbology in a Geographic Information System. In the method, a computer (18) retrieves records (21, 22 and 23) from a data base (20) for each map feature that lies within the extent of the displayed portion (42) of the map (15). The records (22) for point features are organized in "flat" structures (48) where each map feature is represented by a single symbol (16), and in multi-level "hierarchical" structures (54) where each feature is represented by a hierarchy of symbols (16) representing different resolutions of the map features. For a hierarchical symbol structure, the level of records retrieved (62) by the computer is determined by the scale (44) of the map displayed to the screen (14). The computer determines (64), for each symbol (16) at the particular map scale (44), whether the symbol extensively overlaps any other symbol. The symbols that overlap significantly are modified (66) to reduce the clutter by either merging (98) the overlapping symbols into a single symbol including a numeric identifier or replacing (124) the symbol and its siblings by the single parent symbol in the hierarchy. The symbols (16) from the modified records (22) are displayed (70) to the screen (15).
Procédé servant à afficher automatiquement des symboles de cartes dans un système d'information géographique. Dans ledit procédé, un ordinateur (18) extrait des enregistrements (21, 22 et 23) depuis une base de données (20) pour chaque caractéristique de carte se trouvant à l'intérieur de l'étendue de la partie affichée (42) de la carte (15). Les enregistrements (22) de caractéristiques ponctuelles sont organisés en structures "plates" (48), où chaque caractéristique est représentée par un symbole unique (16), ainsi qu'en structures "hiérarchiques" à niveaux multiples (54), où chaque caractéristique est représentée par une hiérarchie de symboles (16) représentant différentes résolutions des caractéristiques de la carte. Pour une structure hiérarchique de symboles, le niveau des enregistrements extraits (62) par l'ordinateur est déterminé par l'échelle (44) de la carte affichée sur l'écran (14). L'ordinateur détermine (64), pour chaque symbole (16) à l'échelle particulière de la carte (44), si le symbole chevauche, de façon importante, tout autre symbole. Les symboles présentant un chevauchement important sont modifiés (66), de façon à limiter les échos parasites, soit au moyen de la fusion (98) des symboles qui se chevauchent en un symbole unique comprenant un identificateur numérique, soit par remplacement (124) du symbole et de ses frères par le symbole parent unique de la hiérarchie. Les symboles (16) provenant des enregistrements modifiés (29) sont affichés (70) sur l'écran (15).
