A method for detecting ionizing radiation, a detector (64) for detection of ionizing radiation, and an apparatus for use in planar beam radiography, comprising such a detector. The detector comprises: a chamber filled with an ionizable medium; first and second electrode arrangements (2, 1, 18, 19) provided in said chamber with a space between them, said space including a conversion volume (13); means for electron avalanche amplification (17) arranged in said chamber; and, at least one arrangement of read-out elements (15) for detection of electron avalanches. A radiation entrance is provided so that radiation enters the conversion volume between the first and second electrode arrangements. The distance between the first and second electrode arrangements is selected to achieve discrimination of fluorescent photons and/or long-range electrons, in order to achieve improved position resolution.
L'invention concerne un procédé de détection des rayonnements ionisants, un détecteur (64) pour la détection de ces rayonnements, et un appareil pour radiographie à faisceau planaire, équipé de ce type de détecteur. Le détecteur comprend: une chambre remplie d'un milieu ionisable; des premier et second arrangements d'électrodes (2, 1, 18, 19) placés dans ladite chambre et séparés par un espace, lequel comprend un volume de conversion (13); un système d'amplification avalanche (17) dans cette chambre; et au moins un arrangement d'éléments de lecture (15) pour la détection d'avalanche. Une entrée de rayonnement est prévue pour que les rayonnements pénètrent dans le volume de conversion entre les premier et second arrangements d'électrodes. La distance entre ces deux arrangements est établie de manière à obtenir une discrimination entre les photons fluorescents et/ou les électrons à longue portée, afin d'améliorer la résolution de position.
