Nitric oxide, nitrosoni- nm, S-nitrosothiols, and S- nitroso-proteins can be de- tested in biological samples, using a method which in- volves injection of samples into a photolysis cell, prior to detection of chemilumines- cence generated by the reac- tion between nitric oxide and see Formula I ozone. To detect S-nitrosoth- iols and S-nitroso-proteins separate aliquots of the same samples are subjected to pre- treatment with mercurous ion, and a protein-precipitat- ing agent, respectively, and the resulting nitric oxide sig- nals are compared to those generated by untreated sam- ples. This method is useful for monitoring the levels of nitric oxide bioactivity in both normal physiological states, and diesease states, such as septic shock, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, hyperhomocysteinemia, pulmonary hypertension, malignancy, infections and central nervous systems disorders.
