Electromagnetic waves are driven in the pipe to be inspected in the pip- ing system by a transmitting antenna of a transmitter, to be propagated in the pipe; while a receiving antenna of a receiver is moved outside the pipe along the pipe, to receive leaking electromagnetic waves for inspecting elements of the piping system, and the location concerned of each element of the piping system to be inspected is detected in reference to the location of the receiving antenna where the level of electromagnetic waves received by the receiver be- comes a peak. The locations to be inspected are the damaged portions such as holes formed by corrosion, cracks, etc. in the pipes, and the locations of joints, etc. It is also possible to move the transmitting antenna outside along the pipe, while arranging the receiving antenna at proper place in the pipe. Furthermore, it is also possible to move both the transmitting antenna and the receiving an- tenna in synchronization to effect the above inspection. When either the trans- mitting antenna or the receiving antenna is moved, the frequency of electro- magnetic waves can be a frequency propagated in the pipe or can also be lower than the cut-off frequency. On the other hand, the antenna can be made long and kept in the pipe, to use a frequency lower than the cut-off frequency with- out moving the antenna.
On fait se propager une onde électromagnétique à l'intérieur d'une conduite constituant un objet d'inspection, à partir d'une antenne de transmission d'un émetteur, et une antenne de réception d'un récepteur est déplacée de long et à l'extérieur de la conduite afin de l'inspecter par réception d'une fuite électromagnétique. Si un niveau de signal de crête est détecté par le récepteur, un défaut est localisé à l'endroit où la conduite peut être corrodée ou fissurée ou bien présente un joint. L'antenne de transmission peut être déplacée le long et à l'extérieur de la conduite tandis que l'antenne de réception peut être disposée au niveau d'une position appropriée sur ladite conduite. L'inspection décrite ci-dessus peut être effectuée par déplacement des antennes à la fois de transmission et de réception, de manière synchronisée l'une avec l'autre. Lorsque l'antenne de transmission et l'antenne de réception sont déplacées, la fréquence de l'onde électromagnétique peut être la fréquence de propagation à l'intérieur de la conduite ou peut être inférieure à une fréquence de coupure. D'autre part, si une antenne allongée est disposée à l'intérieur de la conduite, une fréquence inférieure à la fréquence de coupure peut être utilisée sans déplacer les antennes.
