A system and method for optically detecting samples held in a solution requires the use of a holding plate that has as many as one-thousand through- hole wells, or more. The solution is suspended in these through-hole wells under surface tension between opposed surfaces of the holding plate. A pneumatic pump is then engaged with the plate to establish a differential pressure (Dp) between the upper and lower surfaces of the solution that is equal to approximately 1380 Pa ~two tenths of a pound per square inch (0.2 psi)!. The result is the formation of a convex meniscus on a surface of the solution that causes light passing into the solution to converge and concentrate. This concentration of light, in turn, facilitates optical detection of samples in the solution.
La présente invention a trait à un système et un procédé permettant la détection d'échantillons contenus dans une solution nécessitant l'utilisation d'un plateau de réception qui comporte au moins mille puits traversants. La solution est suspendue dans ces puits traversants sous une force capillaire entre des surfaces opposées du plateau de réception. Une pompe pneumatique est ensuite engagée avec le plateau pour établir une pression différentielle (.DELTA.p) entre les surfaces supérieure et inférieure qui est égale à environ 1380 Pa (deux dixièmes d'une livre par pouce carré : 0,2 psi). Cela entraîne la formation d'un ménisque convexe à la surface de la solution qui provoque la convergence et la concentration de la lumière traversant la solution. Cette concentration de lumière, à son tour, facilite la détection optique des échantillons dans la solution.
