A process to improve the smoke quality and mechanical properties of reconstituted tobacco is accomplished by adding tobacco materials to an aqueous solution containing ammonium salts and urea. The resulting first tobacco slurry is then pressurized under steam pressure to at least 60 psi for a period of from 1 to 5 minutes then depressurized rapidly to ambient. The depressurized tobacco is then formed into a second tobacco slurry wherein the soluble components within the tobacco is removed. The resulting tobacco residue is then prepared into a reconstituted tobacco sheet and the extract is then concentrated to a solids level of at least 30 percent by weight of solids which is added back to the reconstituted tobacco sheet for further processing into smoking articles.
Procédé pour améliorer les propriétés mécaniques d'une feuille de tabac reconstituée moulée et sa qualité lorsqu'on la fume. Ledit procédé consiste à ajouter des morceaux de tabac dans une solution aqueuse contenant des sels d'ammonium et de l'urée. La première boue de tabac résultante est ensuite pressurisée sous une pression de vapeur d'au moins 60 psi pendant environ 1 à 5 minutes, après quoi elle est dépressurisée rapidement jusqu'au retour à la pression ambiante. Le tabac dépressurisé forme ensuite une deuxième boue de tabac et les composants solides du tabac sont enlevés. Le résidu de tabac résultant est ensuite préparé, de sorte qu'une feuille de tabac reconstituée soit formée et l'extrait est concentré jusqu'à l'obtention d'un taux de matières solides d'au moins 30 % en poids de solides, après quoi il est rajouté à la feuille de tabac reconstituée avant un traitement ultérieur pour la production d'articles à fumer.
