A method of melting magnesium or a magnesium alloy in which combustion of the melt is rapidly detected without fail and, based on this result, an alarm is rapidly given and the fire can be extinguished. The melting method comprises melting magnesium or a magnesium alloy in a melting furnace to obtain a melt while supplying a covering gas comprising carbon dioxide and a fireproofing agent to the furnace and keeping the surface of the melt covered with this covering gas. It is characterized in that the concentration of carbon monoxide in the gas which is present in the furnace or is being discharged from the furnace is measured and, based on this value of carbon monoxide concentration, magnesium combustion in the furnace is detected.

L~invention concerne un procédé de fusion du magnésium ou d~un alliage du magnésium selon lequel la combustion de la fonte est rapidement détectée et à coup sûr, une alarme est rapidement déclenchée dans ce cas, ce qui permet d~éteindre le feu. Le procédé de fusion comprend la fusion du magnésium ou alliage du magnésium dans un four de fusion afin d~obtenir une fonte, tout en apportant un gaz protecteur comprenant du dioxyde de carbone et un agent ignifugeant dans le four et en maintenant une couverture dudit gaz protecteur sur la surface de la fonte. Le procédé est caractérisé en ce que la concentration en monoxyde de carbone du gaz présent dans le four ou constituant l~effluent du four est mesurée, la valeur de cette concentration permettant de détecter la combustion du magnésium dans le four.
