Titanium oxide showing photocatalytic activity and having a narrow particle diameter distribution can be produced by a method comprising the steps of (i) inertly heating to a temperature of at least about 60 °C , a composition comprising a titanium compound and a solvent; (ii) reacting the titanium compound with a base at a temperature of at least about 60 °C; and (iii) calcining the reaction product.
