The confidential information stored on an integrated circuit is rendered unintelligible by scrambling the values of the binary codes corresponding to the integrated circuit's instruction set. When appropriate, the codes are decoded by the integrated circuit's instruction decoder so that the intended function of the original (unscrambled) information is realized without revealing the information itself. This invention thereby provides a method of protecting confidential information stored on an integrated circuit by providing a unique (scrambled) instruction set for each application.
