The invention disposed relates to a process for removing hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream, such as sour natural gas, with the formation of elemental sulfur as a by-product. By controlling the reaction conditions, the conversion of hydrogen sulfide is maximized, and the sulfur dioxide selectivity is controlled. Specifically, the sulfuric acid concentration and the reaction temperature may be balanced, depending on the desired product mix.
