In a method used to simulate a shot with a weapon, in order to achieve greater ranges, operation of the trigger on the weapon causes transmission of a laser beam made up of laser pulses, the trajectory of the virtual shot that is fired is calculated, and the deviation of the trajectory from the direction to the target is determined continuously. The first laser beam is pivoted according to the deviations from the trajectory, the transit time of the laser pulses reflected from the target is measured, and the range to the target is determined from this. The flight time of the virtual shot that is fired is calculated for this range to the target, and compared with the time that elapses from the time of the shot until receipt of the reflected laser pulses; if these agree within a range of tolerances, a second laser beam made up of coded laser pulses is transmitted in the same direction as that followed by the first laser beam. The second laser beam is received at the target, where impact damage is computed from the position of the detector at the target that receives the laser beam and from the information derived from the coded pulses.
