A method for treatment of halogen-containing waste material, in particular PVC- containing waste material, is disclosed, wherein the waste material in a decomposition step is heated in a reaction zone in a substantially closed system essentially without addition of water to a temperature between 150 and 750 °C, preferably 250 - 350 °C, in the presence of a halogen-reactive compound selected from alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkali and alkaline earth metal carbonates and mixtures thereof, so as to establish a controllable autogenous pressure substantially above atmospheric pressure, in a sufficient reaction time to convert essentially all halogen present in the waste material to alkali or alkaline earth metal halides, said closed system preferably also comprising a condensation zone, where water vapour and volatile compounds liberated from the waste material are condensed. The remanence obtained in the decomposition step is washed with an aqueous solvent, preferably pure water, and the soluble and insoluble parts of the remanence are separated. By this method the halogen is removed from the waste without uncontrolled emission of halogen-containing acids to the environment.
L'invention concerne un procédé pour le traitement des matières déchets à base d'halogènes, en particulier les déchets qui contiennent du polychlorure de vinyle (PVC). Dans une phase de décomposition, les déchets sont chauffés à l'intérieur d'une zone de réaction qui fait partie intégrante d'un système sensiblement clos. On procède essentiellement sans adjonction d'eau, à une température allant de 150 à 750 DEG C, de préférence entre 250 et 350 DEG C, en présence d'un composé réagissant avec les halogènes sélectionné parmi les hydroxydes ou les carbonates de métaux alcalins et alcalino-terreux, et les mélanges de ces composés. L'objectif est d'établir une pression autogène contrôlable, sensiblement supérieure à la pression atmosphérique, en un temps de réaction suffisant pour convertir essentiellement tous les halogènes des déchets en haloïdes alcalins ou alcalino-terreux. De préférence, le système clos précité comprend aussi une zone de condensation, où la vapeur et les composés volatils libérés par les déchets subissent une condensation. On lave le reliquat de la phase de décomposition avec un solvant aqueux, de préférence de l'eau chimiquement pure, et on dissocie les éléments solubles des éléments insolubles. Le procédé décrit permet d'éliminer les halogènes des déchets en évitant les émissions incontrôlées dans l'atmosphère des différents acides à base d'halogènes.
