A method of removing hiologically active contaminants from water, specifically pharmaceuticals, personal care products and endocrine disrupting compounds is presented. The method includes contacting a contaminated aqueous solution to filtration media. The filtration media comprises bound recombinant fusion proteins in a predetermined concentration, capable of binding said contaminants producing a filtered aoneous solution. Further is provided a preferred embodiment of a filtration system that houses the derivatized media. This method improves upon adsorptive filtration processes by providing high specificity and affinity for trace contaminants that would otherwise screened out by more abundant contaminants. Further, this method improves upon degradative processes as it does not release any byproducts into the water. Still further, this method is scalable as the preparation of filtration media requires no surface activation or extra chemical attachment steps.
