The algorithm of the present invention provides a means for legitimising user rights in digital objects obtained by indirect means. Processing a digital object with an authenticating algorithm generates a Digital Object Authenticity Code (DOAC), which can be recorded in a secure registry in association with a Participant Identification Number (PIN) for the originator of the digital object. Another participant in the system can use the authenticating algorithm to generate a DOAC for a digital object obtained by indirect means and compare such DOAC to those stored in the registry to verify the authenticity of said digital object in question. The participant may have the option of registering themselves as legitimate owners of an authenticated digital object in the secure registry, and if possible, attain rights to distribute said digital object. Relationships between the originator, the digital object, and any user/distributors will be recorded and stored in the secure registry. Incorporating a Transaction Processing System (TPS) into the system, enables a business method to be centered on the relationships between the originator-digital objects-user (and/or distributor).
