There is disclosed a method of forming a diffractive authentication device which generates an optically variable image which varies according to the angle of observation. The method comprises the steps of, providing a primary pattern which encodes a latent image, the primary pattern having a plurality of image elements, and providing a corresponding secondary pattern which will decode the primary pattern to allow the latent image to be observed when the primary and secondary patterns are in at least one registration, wherein the secondary pattern is provided by a diffraction grating microstructure having a plurality of each of at least two different types of diffraction elements. The primary pattern is provided such that predetermined image elements of the primary pattern render diffraction effects from predetermined diffraction elements of the diffraction grating microstructure optically ineffective at least at one observation angle when the authentication device is illuminated with a light source to thereby enable the latent image to be observed.

L'invention concerne un procédé de formation d'un dispositif d'authentification de diffraction générant une image variable sur le plan optique variant en fonction de l'angle d'observation. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à utiliser un premier motif codant une image latente, le premier motif comprenant une pluralité d'éléments d'image, et à utiliser un second motif correspondant décodant le premier motif, de manière à pouvoir observer l'image latente quand les premier et second motifs sont au moins dans un enregistrement, le second motif étant mis en place par une microstructure de réseau de diffraction possédant une pluralité de chaque type, parmi au moins deux types différents, d'éléments de diffraction. Le premier motif est mis en place de manière que des éléments d'image prédéterminés de celui-ci rendent des effets de diffraction provenant des éléments de diffraction prédéterminés de la microstructure de réseau de diffraction inefficaces sur le plan optique au moins au niveau d'un angle d'observation quand le dispositif d'authentification est éclairé au moyen d'une source lumineuse, de manière à permettre ainsi d'observer l'image latente.
