A method for inducing melanogenesis in a human subject having a melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) variant allele associated with loss of or diminished receptor function comprises administering to said subject an amount of an .alpha.- melanocyte stimulating hormone (.alpha.-MSH) analogue effective to induce melanogenesis by the melanocytes in the skin or other epidermal tissue of the subject.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'induire la mélanogenèse chez un sujet humain dont un allèle variant du récepteur de la mélanocortine de type 1 (MC1R) est associé à une perte de fonction de réception ou à une fonction de réception diminuée. Ce procédé consiste à administrer audit sujet une quantité efficace d'un analogue d'hormone de stimulation alpha des mélanocytes (.alpha.-MSH) afin d'induire la mélanogenèse par les mélanocytes dans la peau ou dans d'autres tissus épidermiques du sujet.
