A method of making a formable hockey stick blade, the method comprising: providing a core comprising first and second blade portions with a thickness, the core being made of expandable foam having a Poisson ratio of at least 0.33; forming a preformed stick blade by wrapping the core with a layer of fibers pre-impregnated with a thermoplastic material, the softening point of the thermoplastic material being in the same range than that of the foam; placing the preformed stick blade in a mold; applying heat and pressure to the mold in order to melt the thermoplastic- fibers matrix, soften the blade portions and compress the preformed stick blade such that the thickness of blade portions is reduced; and removing the formable stick blade from the mold.
