A process for alkylating an aromatic compound comprising reacting at least one aromatic compound with a mixture of olefins selected from olefins having from about 8 to about 100 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acidic ionic liquid catalyst, wherein the resulting product comprises at least about 50 weight percent of a 1 , 2, 4 tri-substituted aromatic compound or a 1 , 2, 3 tri- substituted aromatic compound or mixtures thereof.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'alkylation d'un composé aromatique, consistant à mettre en réaction au moins un composé aromatique avec un mélange d'oléfines sélectionnées parmi des oléfines comprenant d'environ 8 à environ 100 atomes de carbone, en présence d'un catalyseur liquide ionique acide, le produit obtenu comprenant au moins environ 50 % en poids d'un composé aromatique 1, 2, 4 tri-substitué ou un composé aromatique 1, 2, 3 tri-substitué ou des mélanges de ceux-ci.
