A method of determining seismic properties of a layer of the seabed, in particular a surface or near-surface layer (5), comprises directing seismic energy propagating in a first mode at a boundary face of the layer so as to cause partial mode conversion of the seismic energy at the boundary face. For example partial mode conversion may occur when seismic energy propagates upwards through the interface between a surface or near-surface layer (5) and the basement (6), owing to the difference in seismic properties between the surface or near-surface layer (5) and the basement (6).In the invention, the two modes of seismic energy - that is the initial mode and the mode generated by mode conversions at the interface - are received at a receiver. The difference in travel time of the two modes between the interface and the receiver is determined from the seismic data acquired by the receiver.
L'invention concerne un procédé pour déterminer les propriétés sismiques d'une couche de fond marin, notamment une couche (5) superficielle ou proche de la surface. Ce procédé consiste à diriger l'énergie sismique se propageant selon un premier mode sur une face limitrophe de la couche, pour provoquer un changement de mode partiel de l'énergie sismique sur la face limitrophe. Le changement de mode partiel peut avoir lieu, par exemple, lorsque l'énergie sismique se propage vers le haut, à travers l'interface existante entre une couche (5) superficielle ou proche de la surface et le socle (6), en raison de la différence entre les propriétés sismiques de la couche (5) superficielle ou proche de la surface et celles du socle (6). Selon l'invention, les deux modes d'énergie sismique c'est-à-dire le mode initial et le mode généré par les changements de mode au niveau de l'interface sont reçus par un récepteur. La différence du temps de propagation des deux modes entre l'interface et le récepteur est déterminée à partir des données sismiques reçues par le récepteur.
