A method of providing new functionality to an electronic product is provided. The new functionality for the elec-tronic product being installed via a new firmware load from a memory card. The new firmware load being released to the electronic product upon the provision of an authentication by the user of the electronic product that matches the authentification credentials stored within the memory card. In a further embodiment of the invention the authentication further supports the transfer of addi-tional content relating to the authenticated user thereby providing the electronic device with a"personality" determined by the user. In another embodiment of the invention the new firmware load is "personalized" to the memory card such that it cannot be illegally duplicated or copied thereby allowing vendors to provide via the Internet new functionalities for electronic products on a procure-ment basis.
L'invention porte sur un procédé d'attribution d'une nouvelle fonctionnalité à un produit électronique. La nouvelle fonctionnalité s'installe au moyen d'un nouveau micrologiciel se chargeant à partir d'une carte mémoire, le chargement du nouveau micrologiciel sur le produit électronique étant autorisé sur présentation par l'utilisateur du produit électronique d'une authentification correspondant aux justificatifs d'identité stockés dans la carte mémoire. Dans un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention, l'authentification requiert en outre le transfert d'un contenu supplémentaire relatif à l'utilisateur authentifié, fournissant ainsi au dispositif électronique une "personnalité" déterminée par l'utilisateur. Dans un autre mode de réalisation encore, le nouveau micrologiciel est "personnalisé" par rapport à la carte mémoire de manière à ne pas pouvoir être illégalement dupliqué ou copié, ce qui permet aux vendeurs de fournir via l'Internet de nouvelles fonctionnalités aux produits électroniques sur une base d'achat.
