A method of reducing ground disturbance. The steps include providing a subsurface insulation material, which includes a layered body which has a layer of thermal insulation having a top surface and a bottom surface. The layer of thermal insulation being in the form of rigid sheets with notches along peripheral side edges that permit the sheets to be placed in side by side overlapping engagement. A layer of wick material capable of drawing water away from by capillary action is fastened to the bottom surface. The subsurface insulation material is laid over a ground surface whereby the layer of thermal insulation thermally insulates the ground surface while the layer of wick material wicks water away from the bottom surface.
