Before renewing a damaged sleeper of a track, a respective fastener (35) having a contact nose (51) provided for application onto a rail base (52) is inserted into a mounting hole (49) in both sections, respectively adjoining the rail base (52) of a rail (23), of a base plate (39). Thereafter, the fastener (35) is welded to the base plate (39) so that the latter remains in its correct position with respect to the rail (23) during the sleeper renewal operation. Alternatively, the fastener (35) may be a magnet (57) temporarily connecting the base plate (39) to the rail base (52).
