The present invention provides a method of tandem cropping for increased production of up to 40% in wheat and mustard crops using varieties with phenological plasticity and temperature tolerance traits. The cereal bread wheat and oil seed mustard are traditional winter season (Rabi) crops in north India/ Indo- Gangetic plains. This area experiences receding levels of warm weather and long days in September, October and November, progressive increase and then decrease of cold conditions and short days between November and March and onset of warm weather turning into summer and relatively longer days in March and April. Conventionally a seasonal crop of wheat or mustard or wheat followed by mustard or vice versa could be taken in the winter Rabi season of Indo-Gangetic plains to increase the production of these commodities. The concept has not occurred to persons skilled in the art of wheat cultivation and breeding and as far as is known there is no report of tandem cultivation of wheat under natural seasonal changes of agro-climates in areas where wheat cultivation is practised. For tandem cropping, wheat and mustard cultivars must posses properties of flowering under long day or short day conditions, tolerating temperature gradients and reaching maturity earlier than normal.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de récolte en tandem pour augmenter la production jusqu'à 40 % de cultures de blé et de moutarde en utilisant des variétés dotées de caractères de plasticité phénologique et de tolérance à la température. La céréale blé panifiable et la graine oléagineuse moutarde sont des cultures d'hiver (Rabi) traditionnelles dans le nord de l'Inde et dans les plaines indo-gangétiques. Cette région est exposée à un temps chaud et des jours longs qui vont en s'atténuant en septembre, octobre et novembre, une augmentation progressive, puis une diminution des conditions froides et des jours courts entre novembre et mars et un début de saison chaude qui aboutit à l'été et à des jours relativement plus longs en mars et avril. Habituellement, une récolte saisonnière de blé ou de moutarde ou de blé puis de moutarde, ou vice-versa, sont les cultures traditionnelles de la saison d'hiver Rabi des plaines indo-gangétiques pour augmenter la production de ces produits. Le concept de culture en tandem n'est pas évoqué par les hommes du métier de la culture et de l'amélioration du blé et pour autant qu'on le sache, il n'existe aucun rapport sur la culture en tandem dans les conditions de changements saisonniers naturels des agroclimats dans les régions dans lesquelles la culture du blé est pratiquée. Pour les récoltes en tandem, les cultivars de blé et de moutarde doivent posséder des propriétés de floraison dans des conditions de jour long ou de jour court, de tolérance à des gradients de température et atteindre la maturité plus tôt que la normale.
