An ATM network comprises a set of interconnected switches (110-118) and gateways (131 and 133). The ATM network is capable of providing both a conventional connection-oriented service or a connectionless service. Where a connectionless service is required, at the input interface, source and destination addresses are inserted into the header and fields in the header are set to values which indicate that a connectionless service is required and whether or not additional processing is also required. At each node between the input interface and the output interface, where a connectionless service is required, each ATM cell is routed in accordance with its source address and destination address and/or a routing table which is set up by routing protocol or network management.
Un réseau ATM est composé d'un ensemble de commutateurs interconnectés (110-118) et de passerelles (131, 133). Ce réseau ATM est capable de fournir à la fois un service avec connexion et un service sans connexion. Quand un service sans connexion est demandé au niveau de l'interface d'entrée, les adresses de source et de destination sont insérées dans l'en-tête et des champs contenus dans l'en-tête sont réglés à des valeurs indiquant qu'un service sans connexion est demandé et si un traitement supplémentaire est demandé ou non. Au niveau de chaque noeud entre l'interface d'entrée et l'interface de sortie, ou un service sans connexion est demandé, chaque cellule ATM est acheminée en fonction soit de son adresse de source et de son adresse de destination, soit d'une table d'acheminement établie par un protocole d'acheminement ou par une gestion de réseau.
