The present invention relates generally to a method of treatment and to agents useful for same. More particularly, the present invention contemplates a method for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of a nervous system disease, demyelinating disease and/or an inflammatory disease of either the central or peripheral nervous system such as but not limited to an encephalopathic condition and even more particularly an encephalomyelopathic condition. The present invention further provides the use of leukemia inhibitory factor or derivatives, homologues or analogues thereof in the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of a nervous system disease, demyelinating disease and/or an inflammatory disease of either the central or peripheral nervous system such as but not limited to an encephalopathic and more particularly an encephalomyelopathic condition. Leukemia inhibitory factor may be used alone or in combination with one or more other therapeutic molecules such as but not limited to other cytokines. The method of the present invention enables the development of a therapeutic protocol for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis and other single episodes of central demyelination, transverse myelitis, HIV-induced leucoencephalopathy or chemotherapy induced leucoencephalopathy.
D'une manière générale, la présente invention concerne une méthode de traitement ainsi que des agents destinés à cette méthode. Plus particulièrement, cette invention se rapporte à une méthode permettant de traiter et/ou de prévenir une maladie du système nerveux, une maladie démyélinisante et/ou une maladie inflammatoire du système nerveux central ou périphérique, telle qu'un état pathologique encéphalopathique, et notamment un état pathologique encéphalomyélopathique. La présente invention concerne également l'utilisation d'un facteur inhibant les cellules leucémiques ou de ses dérivés, homologues ou analogues dans l'élaboration d'un médicament destiné à traiter et/ou prévenir une maladie du système nerveux, une maladie démyélinisante et/ou une maladie inflammatoire du système nerveux central ou périphérique, telle qu'un état pathologique encéphalopathique, et notamment un état pathologique encéphalomyélopathique. Ce facteur inhibant les cellules leucémiques peut être utilisé séparément ou en combinaison avec une ou plusieurs molécules thérapeutiques, telles que d'autres cytokines. La méthode de la présente invention permet le développement d'un protocole thérapeutique destiné aux états pathologiques tels que la sclérose en plaques, la névrite optique et autres épisodes isolés liés à la démyélinisation centrale, la myélite transverse, la leucoencéphalopathie induite par le VIH ou la leucoencéphalopathie induite par la chimiothérapie.
