Disclosed herein is a method for selecting and specifying an appearance of a surface of a coated article, such as an automobile or truck body, comprising the steps of preparing a group of samples of coated substrate using a variety of coating compositions or a range of variations of process application conditions; measuring at least two different appearance characteristic values of each sample; selecting from the group of samples, samples that cover the full range of coating surface appearance; determining from the appearance characteristic values of the selected samples, human visual perception differences data using Multi-Dimensional Scaling and forming spatial organization of the data describing the human visual perception differences and from the spatial organization of the data determining an optimum number of visual perception dimensions required to describe the surface appearance; relating the optimum number of visual perception dimensions to the measured appearance characteristic values,- and setting acceptable appearance characteristic values and process performance requirements to achieve such values in units of multi-dimensional perception space for a coated substrate.
Cette invention concerne un procédé permettant de choisir et de définir un aspect superficiel d'un produit enduit, tel qu'une carrosserie d'automobile ou de camion. Ce procédé englobe les opérations suivantes: constitution d'un groupe d'échantillons de substrat enduit au moyen de diverses compositions ou obtenus au termes de conditions d'application variables; mesure d'au moins deux valeurs caractéristiques différentes concernant l'aspect pour chaque échantillon; sélection du groupe d'échantillons qui couvre toute la gamme d'aspects superficiels du revêtement; détermination, à partir des valeurs caractéristiques d'aspect concernant les échantillons sélectionnés, de données relatives à des différences de perception visuelle humaine au moyen d'un procédé d'échelonnement multidimensionnel et formation d'une organisation spatiale des données qui rendent compte des différences de perception visuelle humaine et, à partir de cette organisation spatiale desdites données, détermination d'un nombre optimum de dimensions de perception visuelle requises pour décrire l'aspect superficiel; mise en relation du nombre optimum de dimensions de perceptions visuelles et des valeurs caractéristiques d'aspect mesurés; et fixation de valeurs caractéristiques d'aspect acceptables et d'exigences quant aux technique d'exécution requises pour atteindre de telles valeurs en unités d'espace de perception multidimensionnelle du substrat enduit.
