A method for detecting the presence of a hydrocarbon deposit (2) in a geographical location (1). The method comprises the steps of: detecting the presence, at the location, of a target polynucleotide encoding a protein capable of metabolising a hydrocarbon, wherein the presence of the target polynucleotide is indicative of the presence of the hydrocarbon deposit; determining the concentration of the target polynucleotide at the location; and determining a value related to the concentration of bacteria at the location and calculating the ratio of the concentration of the target polynucleotide to the value.

L'invention concerne un procédé destiné à détecter la présence d'un dépôt d'hydrocarbures (2) à un emplacement géographique (1). Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à : détecter la présence, à l'emplacement, d'un polynucléotide cible codant une protéine susceptible de métaboliser un hydrocarbure. La présence dudit polynucléotide cible est indicatrice de la présence du dépôt d'hydrocarbures ; déterminer la concentration du polynucléotide cible à l'emplacement ; et déterminer une valeur liée à la concentration de bactéries à l'emplacement et calculer le rapport de la concentration du polynucléotide cible sur la valeur.
