The present invention relates to a novel microorganism belonging to Streptomyces sp. that is capable of decomposing, or hydrolyzing, proteins recalcitrant to proteolysis as well as to protease produced by such microorganisms. The invention also encompasses methods of producing such a protease and methods of using such a protease for the degradation of proteins recalcitrant to proteolysis and in methods for the treatment of conditions involving abnormal prion proteins.
