A muting device for a stringed musical instrument comprising a hollow rectangular body with a lug projecting from said body adapted to engage the top surface of the bridge of a stringed musical instrument. The muting device is fixed to the stringed musical instrument by the means of parallel concave grooves in each side of the muting device which are adapted to receive the strings of the musical instrument. The width of the muting device is slightly greater than the width between the strings of the musical instrument and therefore the muting device is firmly fixed to the instrument. In an engaged position, the muting device is slid up the strings so that the lug engages the top of the bridge. The muting device is adapted to transmit tensile forces inherent in the strings of the musical instrument through the muting device to the lug and subsequently to the top surface of the bridge thus enhancing the muting effect of the device while maintaining its mass very low.
Sourdine, pour un instrument de musique à cordes, constituée d'un corps creux rectangulaire à partir duquel se prolonge une patte de fixation destinée à entrer en contact avec la surface supérieure du chevalet d'un instrument à cordes. La sourdine est fixée à l'instrument au moyen de rainures concaves parallèles, situées de chaque côté de la sourdine, servant à recevoir les cordes de l'instrument. La sourdine est fermement fixée à l'instrument étant donné sa largeur qui est légèrement plus grande que la distance entre les cordes. Pour mettre la sourdine en position, il suffit de la faire glisser vers le haut le long des fils jusqu'à ce que la patte de fixation s'enclenche avec le dessus du chevalet. Les efforts de traction provenant des cordes de l'instrument passent à travers la sourdine qui les transmet à la patte de fixation et ensuite à la surface supérieure du chevalet, ce qui accroît l'effet assourdissant de la sourdine tout en lui permettant de conserver une masse très faible.
