In transmitting information, Modulator-Demodulators (Modems) and digital communication systems in general employ adaptive equalizers in order to eliminate or minimize Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). Equalizers are indispensable part of a digital communication system. Adaptive equalizers used in practice require a training signal. To initialize Modems or digital communication systems, a signal that is known to the receiver has to be transmitted at the beginning. In this invention, we introduce a new approach to eliminate the need for a training signal in initializing Modems or digital communication systems. We introduce a new, fast learning Adaptive Blind Equalizer that does not require a training signal. Hence, the Adaptive Blind equalizer is a self learning algorithm. The Adaptive Blind Equalizer can estimate channels and symbols irrespective of the phase properties of the channels. In other words, the Adaptive Blind Equalizer works with channels that are minimum phase, maximum phase, or mixed phase. This invention also includes a methodology for estimating the model order of a channel. The learning characteristic of the Adaptive Blind Equalizer is independent of the signal to noise ratio (snr). The fast decaying characteristic of the learning curves indicates that the Adaptive Blind Equalizer learns fast. In the case of binary signals, the Adaptive Blind Equalizer learns in as few as twenty symbols. At higher signal to noise ratios, the variance of the channel parameter estimates of the Adaptive Blind Equalizer is negligibly small. In addition, the Adaptive Blind Equalizer achieves zero probability of error at high signal to noise ratios.
