The invention relates to a process for the making of paper or a corresponding fiber product, in which process a cationic chemical is added to the paper or the corresponding fiber product in order to render hydrophobic the paper or the corresponding fiber product, the cationic chemical having the formula Image where R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are each a saturated or unsaturated acyclic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon containing 1-41 carbon atoms, R4 is a saturated or un-saturated acyclic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon containing 1-41 carbon atoms and at least one oxygen atom, and X- is an anion. The invention also relates to a cationic chemical which has an ability to attach to anionic surfaces.
