For the production of colour patterned knitwear products of the sweater type it is customary to use the same type of yarn, only coloured differently. With the invention, use is made of different yarns of natural materials with their associated characteristic natural colours, as it is a purpose to entirely avoid artificially coloured yarns. The different sub areas, consisting e.g. of cotton, silk and flax, will then exhibit different physical properties, e.g. with respect to rigidity and body friendliness, and in order to outbalance these differences the sub areas are provided with a platination at their inner sides consisting of a compensating mesh layer of a relevant natural yarn, e.g. a cotton or silk layer for making a flax area more body friendly or a cotton layer for mechanically stabilizing a slack silk area. In practice, a cotton layer is well suited as an overall platination layer.
