A novel type of formulation for the topical administra- tion of antigens and/or vaccines to mammals via mucosal mem- branes comprising one or more adjuvants/vehicles selected from (a) polyoxyethylene sorbitan monoesters, (b) polyoxyethylene castor oil, (c) caprylic/capric acid glycerides and (d) ganglio- sides in an amount of 0.01 to 15 % (v/v) calculated on the total volume of the preparation.
