The present invention is an improved apparatus and method for using a catalyst to remove contaminants from a fluid stream. Catalytic particles are enmeshed within a highly porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate. The use of an expanded PTFE substrate provides added strength to the substrate and provides open and uniform porosity, thus, assuring proper exchange of molecules between the exterior surface of the substrate and the catalytic particles held within it. As such, the present invention is particularly suitable for use as a cross-flow filter for use in ozone generating office equipment (e.g., an electro-static photocopy machine) or similar application requiring minimal pressure drop across the filter unit.
L'invention concerne un système et un procédé améliorés d'utilisation d'un catalyseur afin de supprimer les contaminants d'un flux de fluide. Des particules catalytiques sont incorporées dans un substrat en polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) expansé extrêmement poreux. Le PTFE expansé permet de renforcer le substrat et lui confère une porosité ouverte et uniforme, ce qui assure un échange approprié de molécules entre la surface extérieure du substrat et les particules catalytiques qu'il contient. De ce fait, l'invention est particulièrement utile en tant que filtre à courant transversal pour un matériel de bureau de production d'ozone ( par exemple, une photocopieuse électrostatique) ou pour une mise en application similaire nécessitant une chute de pression minimum à travers le filtre.
