A portable computer (1) has a clamshell configuration with a base (2) and a screen (3). The screen (3) fits into a recess in the base (2) when closed. The rear of the base (2) fits into a docking station with the computer (1) in an upright position. A carrying handle (9) allows the computer to be easily inserted in the docking station, and to be carried around by a student. A power management circuit (88) maintains power supply to a CPU (80) and RAW (93) when the computer (1) is switched off. This allows instant start- up subject to power supply validation.
