A process and apparatus for making alternate S and Z twist plied yarn from individual singles yarns (12, 12a) includes the steps of tensioning the singles yarns (12, 12a) as they move in a path through the process, twisting the individual yarns in either an S or Z direction, snubbing the yarn to restrain ply twisting so the twist in the singles yarn can equalize itself, stopping the forward movement of the yarn, then bonding the ply-twisted yarns at a node while applying twist, stopping the twisting operation, then repeating the procedure while twisting in the opposite direction. The ply-twisted yarn (30) has a lower defect level of less than 2.5 defects per 100-inch length of yarn.

Un procédé et un dispositif de fabrication de fil retors simple à torsade en S et en Z à partir de filés séparés (12, 12a) fait intervenir plusieurs étapes: tension des filés séparés (12, 12a) pendant leur passage dans l'appareil; torsadage des filés séparés (12, 12a) en S ou en Z; maintien du filé pour conserver le torsadage de façon que le torsadage des filés séparés s'égalise de lui-même; arrêt du défilement avant du fil et ligature des filés torsadés réunis au niveau d'un noeud tout en effectuant un torsadage, puis répétition de la procédure en effectuant un torsadage en sens inverse. Le fil retors (30) présente un niveau de défauts inférieur à 2,5 défauts pour 100 pouces de longueur de fil.
