The present invention relates to a software sparing process and apparatus to reduce the likelihood of software failures. Software sparing provides software entities, called spares, which take over and provide similar functionality as the failed system to the clients of the failed entity. They also permit the introduction of new software versions with no loss in service during the switch over period. These spare entities, which may be located on different nodes in a system, communicate using a standard interface protocol. Sparing is done at the software "chunk" level instead of at the hardware box level, which is the common practice, resulting in lower costs and improved reliability. The invention also provides a computer readable storage medium containing a program element to direct a processor of a computer to implement the software sparing process described earlier.
La présente invention concerne un processus et un dispositif de protection logicielle, permettant de réduire les risques de défaillances logicielles. € cette fin, des entités logicielles dites « de rechange » se substituent aux éléments défaillants et remplissent leurs fonctions auprès des clients. En outre, elles permettent l'introduction de nouvelles versions logicielles sans perte de service pendant la période de transition. Ces entités de rechange, qui peuvent se trouver à différents noeuds d'un système, communiquent selon un protocole d'interface standard. Elles fonctionnent au niveau des « blocs » logiciels plutôt qu'au niveau des fonctions matérielles, comme c'est habituellement le cas, ce qui permet de réduire les coûts et d'améliorer la fiabilité. En outre, l'invention offre un support de stockage lisible par machine, contenant un élément programme qui commande à un processeur d'ordinateur de mettre en oeuvre le processus de protection décrit ci-dessus.
