A process for embossing a card with characters by rotating an embosser to a series of positions where characters are aligned with card positions to be embossed. The character set is sorted to form a first set containing characters in increasing distance between a reference position of the embosser and a position of each character of the first set relative to the reference position. The first set is sorted to form a second set in which the characters increase in distance measured relative to the reference position from a distance of the first character in the second set to a distance of the last character in the second set with some of the successive characters from the first character to the last character in the second set not being located farther from the reference position than an immediately preceding character of the second set. The second set is embossed from the first character of the second set to the last character of the second set by coordinated motion of the embosser and rectilinear motion of a card carriage to sequentially position the embosser and card at selected positions.
