Disclosed is a process for disproportionation of potassium naphthoate to the dipotassium salt of 2,6-NDA which gives reproducible improved yields of up to 40 % which comprises: (a) reacting naphthoic acid in the presence of excess base to produce a disproportionation feed comprising a finely dispersed disordered salt mixture of excess base salts and naphthoic acid salts, wherein the feed is prepared by the steps of: (1) Reacting naphthoic acid in the presence of excess base selected from the group consisting of carbonates and bicarbonates to form a salt; (2) Drying said salt mixture by a method which forms a highly mixed disordered salt mixture characterized by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) signature characterized by low melting peaks not previously observed in the salt; and (b) disproportionating said solid salts in the presence of a disproportionation catalyst to form the dipotassium salts of 2,6-NDA.

L'invention concerne un procédé de dismutation de naphtoate de potassium en sel dipotassique de 2,6-NDA, permettant d'obtenir des rendements améliorés reproductibles atteignant 40 %, caractérisé (a) en ce qu'on fait réagir de l'acide naphtoïque en présence d'une base en excès en vue de produire une charge de dismutation comprenant un mélange, finement dispersé de façon désordonnée, de sels de la base en excès et de sels de l'acide naphtoïque, ladite charge étant préparée conformément aux étapes suivantes : (1) on fait réagir l'acide naphtoïque en présence d'une base en excès, choisie dans le groupe des carbonates et bicarbonates, en vue de former un sel ; (2) on sèche ledit mélange selon un processus de formation d'un mélange intime désordonné de sels, en utilisant un calorimètre à balayage différentiel (DSC), caractérisé par des pics de bas points de fusion qui n'ont pas été préalablement observés dans le sel ; et, (b) en ce qu'on effectue la dismutation desdits sels solides en présence d'un catalyseur de dismutation, en vue de former les sels dipotassiques de 2,6-NDA.
