A graft block copolymer is comprised of a saturated olefinic backbone with pendent anionic polymer side chains. The polymer is produced by copolymerizing an .alpha.-olefin with a 1-alkenyl monomer containing a functional group to which an anionically polymerized polymer can be grafted to produce graft block copolymer, anionically polymerizing at least one anionically polymerizable monomer to form living polymer chains, and then grafting the living polymer chains onto the copolymer to form the graft block copolymer.

Un copolymère alterné greffé se compose d'un squelette oléfinique saturé présentant des chaînes latérales pendantes de polymères anioniques. Le polymère est produit par copolymérisation d'une .alpha.-oléfine avec un monomère de 1-alcényle contenant un groupe fonctionnel auquel un polymère polymérisé par voie anionique peut être greffé afin de produire un copolymère alterné greffé, par polymérisation par voie anionique d'au moins un monomère polymérisable par voie anionique pour former des chaînes polymères vivantes, puis par greffe des chaînes de polymères vivantes sur le copolymère afin de former le copolymère greffé alterné.
