Processes for the synthesis of high purity fatty acid lower alkyl esters comprise the steps of: (a) converting a fatty acid source to a product mixture comprising lower alkyl esters and by-products; (b) water- washing the product mixture at elevated temperature and elevated pressure to remove by-products; and (c) fractionally distilling the water- washed product mixture to obtain high purity fatty acid lower alkyl esters. At least a portion of the fatty acids have from about 20 to about 24 carbon atoms. The high purity lower alkyl esters have an acid value no greater than about 1Ø
L'invention concerne des processus de synthèse d'alkylesters inférieurs d'acides gras de haute pureté caractérisés en ce qu'ils comprennent les étapes suivantes: (a) transformation d'une source d'acides gras en un mélange de produits renfermant des alkylesters inférieurs et des sous-produits; (b) lavage à l'eau du mélange de produits à température et pression élevée en vue d'éliminer les sous-produits; et (c) distillation fractionnée du mélange de produits lavé à l'eau, ce qui permet d'obtenir des alkylesters inférieurs d'acides gras. Une partie au moins des acides gras ont entre 20 environ et 24 environ atomes de carbone. Les alkylesters inférieurs de haute pureté ont un indice d'acidité ne dépassant pas 1,0 environ.
