A process for producing terephthalic acid and/or dimethyl terephthalate includes contacting a toluene-containing reaction stream with a first catalyst under toluene disproportionation conditions to produce an intermediate product stream of para-xylene with negligible ortho-xylene. The first catalyst includes a crystalline molecular sieve which has an ortho-xylene diffusion rate of at least 50 minutes. The first catalyst can be modified by selectivation with a silicon compound or carbon compound. The intermediate product stream, without need for para-xylene purification, is oxidized to terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de produire de l'acide téréphtalique et/ou du téréphtalate de diméthyle, ce procédé consistant tout d'abord à mettre un flux réactionnel contenant du toluène en présence d'un premier catalyseur, dans des conditions de dismutation du toluène, de manière à produire un flux d'un produit intermédiaire renfermant du para-xylène et une quantité négligeable d'ortho-xylène. Le premier catalyseur comprend un tamis moléculaire cristallin présentant une vitesse de diffusion de l'ortho-xylène d'au moins 50 minutes, ce premier catalyseur pouvant par ailleurs être modifié par sélectivation avec un composé de silicium ou un composé carboné. Le flux de produit intermédiaire est ensuite oxydé pour être transformé en acide téréphtalique et/ou téréphtalate de diméthyle, sans qu'il soit nécessaire de procéder à une purification du para-xylène.
