The present invention relates to a process for purifying and concentrating spent sulphuric acids, and in particular those obtained in processes for nitrating hydrocarbons with nitric acid in the presence of sulphuric acid, wherein the spent sulphuric acid is concentrated in vacuo in several stages and the steam-volatile organic compounds are removed completely with steam in a purification stage coupled with the first concentration stage.
