Removal of SO2 and NO x from combustion flue gases is effected to be subjected to irradiation by an electron beam and to the action of microwaves applied in the form of a continuous and/or pulsed stream. The stream of flue gases irradiated by the electron beam in the radiation zone is subjected to the action of microwave energy in the whole cross section of the stream of the flue gases. This results in a decrease in the dose rate "average power of the electron beam" and a reduction in the costs of accelerators while retaining the same removal efficiency. Further, the apparatus for removal of SO2 and NO2 from combustion flue gases is provided in a radiation process in which a stream of accelerated electrons and microwave energy are used simultaneously.
