The invention provides a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of metals. In particular, an aqueous feed solution originating from acid leaching is provided. The aqueous feed solution contains nickel and/or cobalt ions. The pH of the solution is maintained at a level between about 2 and 6. The aqueous feed solution is contacted with a water-immiscible organic phase containing an extractant to load the nickel and/or cobalt metal ions to form a metal-bearing organic phase. The extractant has at least one organic soluble dithiophosphinic acid, alkali, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof. The aqueous feed solution has sufficientlylow levels of chromium (VI) ions, iron (III) ions and copper ions to allow repeated use of the extractant. The metal-bearing organic phase is then separated from the metal-containing aqueous feed solution. Finally, after separation from the aqueous feed solution, the metal-bearing organic phase is contacted with an aqueous strip solution to recover the loaded nickel and/or cobalt from the metal-bearing organic phase.

Cette invention concerne un procédé hydrométallurgique pour la récupération de métaux. On divulgue, en particulier, une solution aqueuse d'alimentation provenant de lixiviation acide. Cette solution aqueuse d'alimentation contient des ions nickel et/ou cobalt. Son pH est maintenu à une valeur située entre 2 et 6. Elle est mise en contact avec une phase organique immiscible dans l'eau, contenant un agent d'extraction des ions métalliques nickel et/ou cobalt, afin de former une phase organique métallifère. L'agent d'extraction comporte au moins un sel de métal alcalin, de métal alcalino-terreux ou d'ammonium d'un acide dithiophosphinique organique soluble. La solution aqueuse d'alimentation comporte des teneurs en ions du chrome (IV), du fer (III) et du cuivre suffisamment basses pour permettre la réutilisation de l'agent d'extraction. La phase organique métallifère est ensuite séparée de la solution aqueuse d'alimentation contenant les métaux. Finalement, on met en contact la phase organique métallifère avec un bain aqueux de dépouillage, afin d'en récupérer le nickel et/ou le cobalt.
