A process for the selective mass production of multiwalled carbon nanotubes from the catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons, comprising reducing in situ a non- previously reduced and non supported precursor of a supported metallic catalyst, under conditions enabling the in situ production of said catalyst and the production of said nanotubes, and recovering said nanotubes.
