The present invention provides a process for the preparation of p-toluic acid by liquid phase oxidation of p-xylene using oxygen or air as oxidant in the presence of p-toluic acid, water as solvent and cobalt salt or its combinations with salts of Ce, Mn as catalyst. Oxidation is carried out at 130- 190~C and pressure sufficient to keep water in liquid state. Oxidation step is followed by filteration to obtain p-toluic acid as major product. Unreacted p- xylene is recovered and recycled and the catalyst is recovered from aqueous phase and is recycled.
L~invention concerne un procédé de fabrication d~acide p-toluique par oxydation en phase liquide de p-xylène, utilisant de l~oxygène ou de l~air comme oxydant en présence d~acide p-toluique, de l~eau comme solvant, et un sel de cobalt ou ses combinaisons avec des sels de Ce ou de Mn comme catalyseur. L~oxydation est effectuée à 130 - 190°C et à une pression suffisante pour maintenir l~eau à l~état liquide. L~étape d~oxydation est suivie d~une filtration pour obtenir l~acide p-toluique comme produit majoritaire. Le p-xylène n~ayant pas réagit est récupéré et recyclé, et le catalyseur est récupéré dans la phase aqueuse et recyclé.
